The Summer holiday collection from Last Frontiers

Our British summer is the ideal time to visit a number of countries in South America, and we have put together a collection of some of our favourite destinations that lend themselves perfectly to a 2 to 3 week trip and are a great fit for travel from June to August.

Examples include the tropical Amazon rainforest and dramatic sand dunes of Brazil; enjoying the coffee region and Caribbean beaches of Colombia; and taking in the colonial cities and awe-inspiring salt flats of Bolivia.

The options are endless and we can of course come up with more suggestions and tailor a trip for you.

Brazil - Family jungle adventure and overland journey

Our 13 day ‘Family Brazil’ itinerary begins with three nights in the Amazon rainforest, going on daily adventures accompanied by native guides. A flight to colonial São Luis then takes you to the start of a five night overland adventure, crossing the Lençois Maranhenses National Park, with its spectacular series of endless white sand dunes and freshwater lagoons. The journey ends at the trendy beach village of Jericoacoara, where you have time to relax for four nights (or go on more adventures).

This Last Frontiers itinerary includes B&B accommodation, with full board in the Amazon, private transfers and excursions (shared in the Amazon). All flights are included and international flights are via São Paulo with Latam airlines.

Explore Colombia's highlights on this 14 day trip. Spend two nights on arrival in the capital, Bogotá, before flying to the coffee region for a three night stay at a traditional coffee hacienda with excursions included. Continue to Medellín for a couple of nights, with time to explore the city and the surrounding area. Another flight takes you to the beautiful colonial port of Cartagena for three nights. End your trip with a few nights on the Caribbean coast or, for better swimming beaches, you could fly to the Caribbean island of San Andrés.

Bolivia and Chile - culture, scenery and colonial cities

Salar de UyuniSalar de Uyuni

Head off on an exploration of Bolivia, before crossing the border to experience the Atacama Desert in Chile. This trip begins with two nights in the capital, La Paz. A night is then spent on beautiful Sun Island on Lake Titicaca, before flying to the colonial city of Sucre. Spend two nights here before continuing on to Potosí, once the Spanish Crown's richest city, to visit the mine, the mint and stay overnight. Continue overland to Uyuni, from where you embark on a three night overland 4x4 adventure across the dramatic and surreal landscapes of the salt flats and high altiplano. Cross into Chile and spend three nights in San Pedro de Atacama, with excursions into the surrounding area. Before flying home, spend two nights in Santiago, with free time to explore.

This Last Frontiers 16 day itinerary is from £5,400 per person based on two sharing with B&B accommodation throughout, some lunches and full board on the Uyuni journey; private transfers and excursions. All flights are included and international flights are direct with British Airways (outbound to Lima; return from Santiago).

Highlights of Peru

Our 15 day ‘Classic Peru’ itinerary includes stays in Lima and Arequipa, followed by an overland journey into the awe-inspiring Colca Canyon. The trip continues to the shores of Lake Titicaca before enjoying a full day spectacular train journey to Cusco. After two nights in Cusco head to the breathtaking site of Machu Picchu, staying overnight in the village below the site. The final few days are then spent enjoying the sites and markets in the Sacred Valley. June to August is a lovely time of year to visit Peru, right in the middle of the dry season. For those wanting a cultural experience, the Inti Raymi festival is celebrated every 24 June and the movable feast of Corpus Christi often falls in June.

This Last Frontiers ‘Classic Peru’ itinerary includes B&B accommodation, entrance fees to all sites and transfers. All flights are included and international flights are non-stop with British Airways from London Gatwick to Lima. For prices see www.lastfrontiers.com/itineraries/classic-peru

For active people we also have our 'Family Peru' trip www.lastfrontiers.com/itineraries/family-peru with all sorts of fun activities included (and not just for families!). Or we can of course create a completely unique itinerary, according to your interests.

Although much of Central America is rainy at this time of year, it should by no means put you off as showers are generally quite predictable and do not last all day.

Mexico is another possible destination where you could do something along the lines of our ‘Classic Mexico' itinerary www.lastfrontiers.com/itineraries/classic-mexico. Alternatively, you could do a self-drive itinerary around the Yucatán peninsula, with time spent on the Caribbean beaches (if you are a big family/group of friends, there are some lovely villa options here).

Costa Rica is another great option, and we have our ‘Family Costa Rica' itinerary which includes a stay on the Caribbean side (which is drier when the rest of the country is wet) www.lastfrontiers.com/itineraries/family-costa-rica. We sent journalist David Rose and his family here one August: www.lastfrontiers.com/articles/view/david-rose-costa-rica-family-adventure-mail-on-sunday-april-2017
