Itinerary summary
Buenos Aires
Days 1-3: Arrive in the Argentine capital and spend three nights in the popular district of Recoleta. Take a private tour of the city including a visit to the bustling and colourful suburb of La Boca and an evening at an authentic tango house for dinner and a show.
Tierra del Fuego and the southern fjords
Days 4-8: Fly to Ushuaia, and spend the night in the most southerly city in the world, on the shores of the Beagle channel. Free morning to visit Lapataia National Park and in the afternoon board a small expeditionary cruise ship for a four night journey to Punta Arenas (Chile), through steep-sided fjords and past magnificent glaciers (with daily shore excursions). Every effort will be made to visit Cape Horn, although whether or not you will land will depend on the weather.
Note: This Cruceros Australis cruise also operates in the opposite direction.
Chile: Torres del Paine
Days 9-11: Disembark at Punta Arenas, from where you head to the Torres del Paine National Park (about 4-5 hours), where sheer granite towers emerge behind glaciers and ice fields and are reflected in blue lakes - simply breathtaking. Stay at a lodge in or just outside the park and explore each day - there are many hikes as well as horseback and boat excursions.
Chilean Lake District
Days 12-13: Fly from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt and transfer to the town of Puerto Varas on the shores of lake Llanquihue. You'll have one free day to explore the area: there are many national parks and snow-capped mountain vistas to admire - the Osorno volcano is especially dramatic.
Lake Crossing and Argentine Patagonia
Days 14-16: Depart on the famous lake crossing to Argentina, by boat and by bus across three lakes and through temperate rainforest. After a night in the Bariloche area, pick up a hire car and explore the Andean towns and villages of the Argentine Lake District. Particular highlights include the picturesque Seven Lakes road to the north of Bariloche.
Buenos Aires
Days 17-18: Fly to Buenos Aires for a final night before flying home or continuing your journey.
